Obituary of Persis Anderson Winship Carter

Persis (“Pert”) Anderson Winship Carter died January 18, 2012 after having been diagnosed with cancer a year earlier. She was born on August 2, 1921 to Ruth Coburn Anderson and Edwin Hazelton Anderson of Hingham MA, the youngest of three girls. She went to school in Hingham, graduating from Hingham High as Valedictorian. She earned a degree from Radcliffe College, after which she went on to join the Navy WAVES as an officer in WWII. Following her service, she went to Boston University for a masters degree in Social Work, which led to her professional career as a therapist with children. Professional life was parallel to family life for Pert. She married Granville Montgomery (“Monty”) Winship, MD, a psychiatrist, and they settled in New Britain, CT. Pert and Monty raised three daughters and a son, all of whom went on to professional careers. After the children were grown, she and Monty were divorced and Pert later married George Carter, MD of Cambridge, MA; George was also a psychiatrist. The two of them travelled the world, eventually retiring to Charlestown, RI and then to The Village at Duxbury. Pert’s family and many friends knew her as bright, funny, thoughtful, an artist, community volunteer, good at cards, and generally a gracious lady. Pert dealt with her final illness with dignity and good humor. She will be sorely missed. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Anderson Pratt of Kingston, RI and her children, Christopher Winship (Nancy) of Chestnut Hill, MA, Nancy Winship Poole (Allen) of Middlefield CT, Linda Winship Albert (Bruce) of Atlanta, GA, Susan Winship (John) of Lincoln, MA, and two stepsons, Ricky Carter (Michaela) of Arlington, MA, and David Carter (Bob) of New Haven, CT. She also had eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her sister, Francis Anderson Endicott of Hingham, MA. A service will be held at the Unitarian Church in Kingston, MA on Saturday, February 4 at 3:00PM.
