Sylvia (Pires) Phillips, age 81, of Kingston, died suddenly on Friday, July 3, 2015, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 26, 1934, in Kingston, the daughter of the late Manuel & Maria (das Dores) Pires. Sylvia graduated in 1952 from Kingston High School as a member of the National Honors Society. She was a member of the Friends of the Kingston Council on Aging and volunteered at the Kingston Senior Center. Sylvia enjoyed many years spending time on the water, both fishing and clamming with family and friends, and during the winter months, one could find her doing crafts. She also loved to paint and knit. Her husband, Henry Phillips, died in 2002. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Burgess) Bond of Kingston; her son, James Burgess of Kingston; a granddaughter, Stephanie Bond of Kingston; two sisters, Arminda (Minnie) Tavares of Plymouth and Elaine Sturtevant & her husband Richard of West Wareham; a brother, Manuel Pires & his wife Marjorie of Kingston, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends. She was also the sister of the late Alda Valenziano, Sr. Mary Pires and Evelyn Whitcomb. Sylvia will be missed by all that knew her. Visitation will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main Street, (Route 106), Kingston, on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, from 9:00-10:45 AM, followed by Graveside Services at the Saint Joseph Cemetery, Elm Street (Route 80), Kingston, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sylvia's memory may be made to the Friends of the Kingston Council on Aging, c/o Council on Aging, Evergreen Street, Kingston, MA 02364.
