Pembroke—Donald R. Dunbar of Pembroke died peacefully on October 22, 2015 at Webster Park Rehabilitation Center in Rockland after a long illness. He was 83.
Donald was born and raised in Brockton, the only child of Cecil and Edith (Story) Dunbar. He went to Boston University and then taught at Colby College and Bridgewater State College before returning to Boston University for the rest of his career. He retired in 1997. He loved poetry, music, gardening, the Patriots, cats, writing to his pen pals, and especially his family. He was a scholar and a gentleman. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara (Perkins) Dunbar, his children, Elizabeth Dunbar, Sarah (Dunbar) Kelbaugh and her husband Douglas, and Rebecca Dunbar and her husband Anjmun Sharma. He was grandfather to Cameron and Brady Kelbaugh and Arjun, Karishma, and Roshan Sharma. He was also uncle to many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Hanover, on Saturday November 7, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Hanover www.standrewshanover.org.
