Obituary of Mary Susan Douglass
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Susan “MarySue” (Frantz) Douglass of Marshfield died peaceably on December 26, 2015. Born April 3, 1942 of Edwin and Virginia Frantz in Malverne, NY, she met her husband Jere while in college. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Framingham, MA where they settled down and raised their two children Cara and Colin. After receiving a BA with honors in Elementary Education from SUNY Oneonta, she taught First Grade for a number of years. Later, she received a MA in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock and taught preschoolers. During high school and college, she worked in the local libraries refiling books and answering questions. When an opportunity arose for a part-time position as an assistant at a corporate library, she jumped at the chance. She received a MA in Library Science from Simmons and became the full-time librarian for the international software company Logica.
She was an accomplished seamstress sewing clothes for the whole family. She was particularly adept at making matching mother daughter outfits. Spring and Fall, would find her hard at work in her flower beds, expanding them, weeding, rearranging layouts. Summers, the family would drive to the Wessagussett Yacht Club on Friday night, spend the weekend sailing with friends while sleeping and cooking on the boat. Summer vacations would take the family to the Cape and Islands or Narragansett Bay and Block Island. She would often walk beaches, collect shells and driftwood, arrange her finds on the deck and bring out her watercolors for a permanent remembrance. Winter meant a subscription series to the Boston Symphony Orchestra for 45 years with family and friends. She and Jere recently moved to the Village at Proprietors Green Retirement Community in Marshfield to be closer to her children and the yacht club.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, her two children Cara Douglass-Graff of Scituate and Colin Douglass of Braintree, her brother Richard Frantz of Newton, and two grandchildren Connor (Race) and Bryn Graff. Friends may wish to make contributions in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
