Obituary of Samuel B. Babbitt

SAMUEL B BABBITT - January 18, 1926- February 2, 2016 Born in Rutland, Vermont, Sam graduated from the Tilton Academy in NH where he excelled in track and field competition, which became a lifetime interest. After completing his two year enlistment in the U.S. Army which began in the closing months of World War II, he moved to Boston where he furthered his natural talent for drawing, painting and design at the Museum School of Fine Arts. Sam always had a creative and artistic mind and a fine eye for detail and he used these strengths and his arts education as the basis for adding more technical skills as an upholsterer in a Boston shop until his father asked him to take charge of the new Volkswagen dealership in Kingston. After that dealership closed he continued selling high end automobiles in Eastern Massachusetts until he started his own upholstery business where he worked for several years. In the Early 1980's Sam decided to change his career direction and pursued studies in counseling at Cambridge College, finishing with a Masters degree. This professional certificate qualified Sam to pursue his dream of helping others as a staff member in the Plymouth County Sheriffs Department. Sam was lucky in love when he met and married Trudy da Costa in 1961. They had two sons, Samuel III, and Christopher, who also survive. Sam was truly a Renaissance man and extremely health conscious. An avid runner almost into his eighties, he maintained an active lifestyle even while battling cancer, and other health issues. Thanks to his influence, the Babbitt home was always full of music and art for the whole family. He was widely recognized for his hilariously accurate hand drawn caricatures, and his eclectic taste in music. Piano was his favorite, but he also taught his son Chris how to whistle (Sam had the ability to whistle thirds and fifths!) Sam loved small sports cars and was a Lifetime Member of the Cape Cod Sports Car Club. His son Sam remembers the wild rides with his dad and the joy of his father teaching him how to drive in the snow. Sam had a long and productive life, enjoyed 55 beautiful years of marriage with Trudy, raised 2 loving sons with her, and will be sincerely missed by all. A Funeral service will be held at First Parish Church in Kingston on Friday, February 12 at 10:00AM. Internment will be private.
