Obituary of Chapin Wallour

Chapin Wallour died peacefully on April 26th. He led a full and happy life. He was born on May 14, 1919. Chapin spent his childhood summers in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, where he learned to sail, and quickly began his lifelong reputation as one of the best sailors on Buzzard's Bay. He designed and built his first wooden sailboat, Falcon, when he was just 14. Chapin graduated from Harvard in the class of 1942. He spent his professional life as an Industrial Engineer. In 1944 he was one of the founders of the Sports Car Club of America. He owned many sports cars in his lifetime, but his favorite was his 1930's vintage Bentley convertible. His passion for meticulous detail and any activity that involved precision instruments led him, in retirement, to restoring antique clocks and watches. Chapin's two great loves were his wife, who predeceased him in 2007, Dorothy Jane Gooch Brown Wallour, and his Herreshoff sloop, Hornet. He was happiest with Dorothy onboard Hornet where his confidence and intuitive sense of his boat, the wind, the weather and himself made him an excellent sailor. He is survived by his brother, John Wallour, and his three remaining step children, Shirley, Ann, and Brooks Brown. His fourth step child, Peter Brown predeceased him on April 17, 2016. Family and friends will be gathering at the Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury on Wednesday, May 4, at 11:00AM. A graveside service will be held at Mayflower Cemetery at 11:30AM.
