Obituary of Betty Parker McGill
Please share a memory of Betty to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Betty A. (Parker) McGill passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 27, 2017. Known affectionately as Betts, she was a resident of Duxbury for 50 years.
She was loving wife to the late Edwin Perry McGill, Jr., who was the love of her life and passed too soon in 1985. Loving mother to her sons, Bob McGill and wife Patricia of Duxbury, Jeff McGill and wife Barbara of Northboro and daughter, Jodi Benson and husband Kurt of Duxbury. Proud grandmother of Meghan McGill and husband Adam Rago, Brendan and Brad McGill, Kaley and Hunter Benson, Andrew and Katie McGill. Dear sister to Dorothy Patten-Ferreira of Hilton Head Island, SC and aunt to several nieces and nephews.
Born October 5, 1932 at Winchester Hospital, Betts was daughter of the late Ernest L. and Edith A. (Johnson) Parker. She was a graduate of Winchester High School (class of 1950) and later attended Mount Holyoke College and Simmons College, where she earned a BA degree in Business (class of 1954). She married her beloved husband “Tunk” in 1955 and raised their three children in Duxbury, a town she loved dearly. Besides spending time with her children and grandchildren, Betts enjoyed giving her time and support through volunteering. She volunteered more than 20 years at the Duxbury Thrift & Consignment, where she served as secretary and bookkeeper. Betts also volunteered at the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, Cranberry Hospice Festival of Trees, and devoted many years of service to Pilgrim Church of Duxbury, where she served as deacon, usher, chaired the Flower Committee and Bridge Club and was active in several committees. Betts was a friend to many whom she met through church, bridge and volunteering. Her love of cooking and collecting recipes were enjoyed by many. Her smile, humor and generous heart were contagious and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday, December 30th at 10:00 AM at Pilgrim Church of Duxbury, 404 Washington Street. There will be no visiting hours. Graveside services will follow at Mayflower cemetery in Duxbury.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Betts’s memory may be made to Cranberry Hospice (36 Cordage Park Circle, Plymouth, MA 02360) or Duxbury Thrift & Consignment (48 Depot Street, Duxbury, MA 02332).
