Obituary of Carl E. Bitters

Carl Edward Bitters of Duxbury, entered into Heaven on April 19, 2009 after a brief illness. He was 92 years old.
Born on the family farm in Duxbury, he graduated from Duxbury High School in 1935, and was the last living member of his graduating class of thirteen students. He served his country in WW II in the Army Airborne Division, 809 Aviators Ground Engineers, from 1940-1945. He was a member of the American Legion Duxbury Post 322 and a life-long member of the Duxbury Call Firefighters. He served his community working for the Duxbury School System for 35 years. He also owned the first landscape business in Duxbury and served numerous town residents over a seventy-year period. He was a founding member of the First Baptist Church of Duxbury. A life-long hunter, fisherman, farmer and gardener, he loved growing vegetables, shrubs and flowers of all kinds including his prized dahlias. One of his chores while growing up in Duxbury was to put the cows out to pasture on Modoc Street each morning before walking to school. He was a hard-working man of faith, honesty and integrity and a devoted father and husband.
He leaves his wife of fifty-five years, Bernice Bitters, of Duxbury; his son, David Bitters and daughter-in-law Laura Bitters, and three grandchildren, Chloe-Audrey Bitters, Lucas-Parker Bitters, and Juliana-Joy Bitters, all of Duxbury; his late daughter Cynthia Marsha Bitters of Duxbury; sister Olga-Victoria Bitters of Duxbury; sister Adeline McKnight Bitters of La Jolla, CA; late sister Marguerite Edson Shaw Bitters of New Jersey; and niece Judy Edson of WA.
There will be a graveside service for friends and family on Thursday, April 23rd at 10:00am, at the Mayflower Cemetery, Tremont St., Duxbury. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Duxbury on Saturday, May 2nd at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Bitters Memorial Fund c/o Rockland Trust Bank, P.O. Box 1627, Duxbury, MA 02331.
