Bernard E. “Bernie” Munro, Sr. age 74 years passed away on December 8, 2009 after a long and determined battle with cancer. Bernie was raised in Hanson, graduated from Hanover High School in 1953 and lived in Pembroke for most of his life. He was a professional Land Surveyor on the South Shore for over 50 years, working at Perkins Engineering, Boston Survey Consultants, Loring Jacobs/Malcolm T. Shaw Co. and up until his passing, at Land Planning, Inc. of Hanson where he served as Vice President. He was also a board member of the Hanson Athletic Association and a member of MALSCE. In his younger years he enjoyed playing softball, bowling and was an avid trapper, hunter and saltwater fisherman. In the 1960’s he managed two of Pembroke’s “finer” establishments, Hosea’s and The Wander In. His hobbies included working, traveling in his RV, working, contributing to Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, Atlantic City & Las Vegas and working. He also enjoyed playing cards with his friends from the Hanson AA and the Commercial Club of East Bridgewater. He is survived by his loving wife Sandra J. (Ainslie) Munro, his parents, Ronald G. and Avis L. (Hammond) Munro of Florida, his siblings Arthur Munro of North Carolina, Freda Lee and her husband Robert of Florida, Doris Small and her husband Charles of Florida, Lorraine Edwards and her husband John of Hanson and Charles Munro and his wife Vera of Connecticut. He was the father of Jean L. Baragwanath and her husband Bill of Hanson, Bernard E. Munro, Jr. and his companion Shelda Colton of Florida, David S. Munro of New Mexico, Gary R. Rice and his wife Corinne (Baragwanath) of Pembroke, Jude A. Wood of New Mexico, Susan J. Cormac of Utah, and Melissa L. Munro and her companion Peter Post of Halifax. He is also survived by his many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the nephew of James & Gert Hammond of Hanson , Sylvia Munro of Vermont, and Phyllis Schneider of Florida. He also leaves his good friends Ralph Cole, his card partner Nancy and her husband Jimmy Giblin. Calling hours will be held on Saturday December 12, 2009, from 9 a.m. – Noon with services immediately following at the Shepherd Funeral Home 7 Mattakeesett St(Rte. 14 Pembroke Ctr). A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Hanson Athletic Association on Reed Street, Hanson from 1 – 5 p.m. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie’s memory can be made to the Town of Pembroke Recreation Department, 100 Center Street, Pembroke, MA 02359.
