Obituary of Harry H. Brown

Harry H. Brown of Halifax, MA, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the age of 102 after a brief illness. Harry was a youth leader, community volunteer, farmer, author, and historian. Harry was grandson of the late Captain Joshua Brown of Salem; eldest son of Lewis Roby Brown and Ethel Lillian Dyer, brother of the late Richard Brown; and the late Elizabeth Donner; husband of the late Mildred Blackman Brown; father of Stephen Brown and Deborah Brown Provost; father in-law to Michael Provost and loving companion of Patsy Reilly. Harry was born in 1907 and lived on South Street and Paradise Lane in the Town of Halifax. Following his retirement in 1985 he with his wife spent their summer months at the pick-your own blueberry Kemah Farm in Alexandria, NH. As a youth leader he founded the town Troop in 1926 and was a life long member of Boy Scouts, receiving a lifetime mentor award in 2010. He also is a founding member of the Halifax Cub Scouts Pack and the Halifax Boys Baseball League. He also built and maintained a nature trail behind the elementary school for environmental education. Harry served on the Conservation Committee, the Forestry Committee and the Elementary School Building Committee for the town. He was also a Grange Master and member of the Farmer’s Club and the Halifax Historical Society. Harry wrote “Stories of Yesteryear” and was noted for telling folk stories. He was an expert on the settlement of Middleberry (now part of Halifax) and an avid dowser. He was a chauffer for the late Ala A. Libbey, owner of the Kings Timber estate in Halifax for over 40 years. In his later years he was active with the Senior Citizen’s Center, mentoring youth and doing leather craft. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the Halifax Congregational Church on May 22, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. The church is located next to the Town Hall on Route 106 in Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations should made to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 39 - Halifax, Mutual Bank, P.O. Box 150, Whitman, MA 02382.
