Obituary of Tom Gutekunst

Please share a memory of Tom to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Thomas Andrew Gutekunst, 63, an unrivaled teller of stories

Tom Gutekunst, of Kingston, Duxbury, and Millis, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday, December 28.

Tom was born on Naval Station Newport to Andrew and Joan. He worked at In-Stock Products Company for twenty years eventually graduating from the shipping/receiving department to General Manager before starting his own company, Priority Cables. Tom later settled into a career as a residential electrician.

Tom, affectionately known to friends as “Guda,” lived a full life ranging from skiing trips at Killington to motorcycle rallies in Laconia. He had a passion for being on the beach or on the water, and would load up his family every weekend during the summer, braving seemingly insurmountable traffic, to enjoy a day on Saquish. Tom was a skilled fisherman, winning the 4th Annual Rocky Nook Striped Bass Tournament. However, some of Tom’s favorite moments were spent patrolling Duxbury Bay and Plymouth harbor in his aluminum boat, the Tinman. In fact, he enjoyed himself so much one night that he earned the nickname “Corky.”

In his later years Guda could generally be found in one of three places: The Club, The Farm, or at home in the command chair. Invariably, he would be surrounded by friends and family, regaling them with some skillfully woven tale (the contents of which may be subject to some fact checking).

Tom leaves behind his three children Bill, Eric, and Lauren, his father Andrew and mother Joan of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, his sisters Ellen Gutekunst of South Portland, Maine, and Mary DeLong of Montara, California, and ex-wife Marguerite Gutekunst of Weymouth, Massachusetts. Also left behind are his nephew Victor Plourde and niece Jade Fiotto. In addition to his family, he leaves behind countless friends who will forever miss steadfast loyalty. Visiting hours will be held on  Thursday, January 3rd, from 4-8:00 pm at the Shepherd Funeral Homes, 216 Main St (Rt. 106) Kingston.
