Obituary of George J. Migre

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

George Joseph Migre, 98, of Pembroke died peacefully on January 25, 2019 with his family by his side

George was born in Hanover to Helena W. (Gray) and Pasquale J. Migre. He grew up during the depression in the town of Pembroke with his parents and two younger brothers, William, and James. He and his brothers and boyhood friends spent many happy days swimming in ponds in the summer and skating on them in the winter. It was a simple time, and he cherished all of the memories he had of this time in his life. George attended Pembroke Schools and graduated with the class of 1939.

After high school, George enlisted in the Navy as an Apprentice Seaman in the ship repair unit. After finishing boot camp and training, he was assigned to the USS Callisto AGP 15, a PT boat tender. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in May of 1946.

In September of that same year, he married the love of his life, Mary Barbara Cummings. They met at Sargent’s restaurant in Norwell before the war and she waited for him to come back. He often told his family about how fortunate he was the day he met her. They were married for 66 years before Barbara passed away in 2013. They built a house together in East Pembroke and raised their family together.

George was an accomplished machinist and went to work for the Marine Compass Company, now E.S. Ritchie and Sons in Pembroke, where he worked for 71 years. He loved his job as foreman of the machine shop and stayed until he was 91 years old.

George will be remembered for his kind and friendly personality, as well as his strength of character and his strong work ethic. He was a devoted family man and a good friend to many. George was truly a member of “The Greatest Generation”.

George leaves behind a daughter, Kathleen Bergeron and her husband Lee, and a son, George Migre Jr. and his wife Geraldine. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, Geraldine Bellas, John Bergeron, Laura Osborne, Thomas Bergeron, Lorna King, Lindsay Gage, and Emily Migre. He was blessed with 11 great grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, James Migre of Marshfield, and was predeceased by his brother William Migre of Hanover.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours from 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 31st at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 7 Mattakeesett St (Rt. 14) Pembroke. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 1st at 11:00 AM at the Shepherd Funeral Home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
