Obituary of Dempsey Gibbs Ayers

Dempsey Gibbs (Sonny) Ayers, 80, of Plymouth, Ma, passed away on December 15th, 2020 in West Roxbury VA Hospital.
Dempsey was born in North, South Carolina to Henry and Susie Bell Ayers on April 15th, 1940. He joined the US Navy in 1957. He worked as a Aircraft Mechanic for US Navy for 19 years. He enjoyed many military tours, and was awarded Presidential Unit citation, National Defense Service medals, Navy Achievement medal, Vietnam Service medals (1 and 3 stars), multiple Armed forces good conduct Medals, Republic of Vietnam Camp Expeditionary, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He retired from the US Navy in 1976 and went on to become an automotive mechanic and raise his children along with many neighborhood children that needed a loving and supportive figure in their life. He enjoyed nature, wildlife and exploring new areas.
Dempsey is survived by his wife, Diane Ayers of Plymouth, Ma., eight children: William Harlen, Aaron Ayers, James Harlen, Patricia Woodrow, Cynthia Skelton, Christopher Harlen, Gina Ayers-Barnett, Dana Ayers, nineteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by both parents Henry and Susie Bell Ayers, and two brothers Henry and Robert Ayers.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 21st at the Shepherd Funeral Home, Kingston at 11:00 AM.
