It has been 4 years since I last sat with Elenor and Hardy at the annual Past President's dinner of the New England Surgical Society. We never failed to sit together. Although an academic tour de force meeting, it was the wonderful advance expectation of sharing our personal stories each year that was the hi light of my attendance . Hardy , a true giant in America Surgery, to me was not a singular figure. Hardy and Eleanor were as one. I have never known a more humble gentle person, nor anyone who could match Elenor’s love. I will miss my friend. But the memory of his warm smile, sweetness, and wisdom will be alive in my soul for all the days to come. Sleep well my friend.

Thank you for sharing such a vibrant and dedicated man with us. I am a former patient of his; Dr Stuart Price sent me, along with the title of “hardly human Hendren” for many surgeries. Hardy saved my life on more than one occasion. We have many stories from that decade. One of my favourite stories came the day before my discharge from CHB. I was to leave in the morning and fly back to Pittsburgh. My bed was needed and Hardy offered my mom and I his apartment! I was so excited! My mom did not share my enthusiasm. I spent that last night in the hospital and wow, did that offer get the nurses talking!
Thank you, Dr Hendren… thank you for your insight and critical thinking, thank you for sharing your gift by educating so many other pediatric surgeons, thank you for understanding when I was so angry…
May you abide in the Light…
My deepest condolences to your family and friends.

My condolences to the Hendren family. Dr Hendren performed vesicoureteral reflux surgery on me as a 3 yr old in 1965. I knew his name growing up because my parents spoke of him often over the years. They told me he later became famous for his ground breaking surgeries. My abdominal scar is a reminder of my successful surgery and I often thought of him. I am now 60 hrs, and out of curiosity looked him up to see where life took him. Wow. I was so happy to learn he lived a long successful career and life well into his 90’s. Thank you for caring for me as a child. Rest in peace.

Dr. Hendrin operated on me when I was just a baby. I had two sets of veins and he was able to close one set off so they were not visible under my skin. I saw him until I was 6 years old. I wrote him a letter thanking him when I was 6. I cannot say enough about him. He' is the BEST doctor in the whole world to me. They just don't make them like that anymore unfortunately.
He gave his life to help children with complicated problems.
I love him so much for what he did for me and others!

With deep pain I learned about passing of a great Man and a great surgeon. In a distant 1998, our son was born with a very complicated problem. I our local hospital we were told to prepare for three surgeries. By Providence sent us into Dr. Hendren's hands. It took two surgeries and a great creativity to straighten the issue by 2000.
Lately, we had a proforma follow up in our local hospital, when the surgeon reviewed the history, he added that nothing could have been done better.
Dr. Hendren left infinite legacy that will last till the end of time.

I just read today that Dr. Hendren passed away. What an amazing man and life! I was blessed the day Children’s transferred my daughter’s case from ENT to the surgical Department at her pediatrician’s request. I had not been happy with the care she was receiving and they would not allow going over heads in the ENT department.
My daughter had bad esophageal scarring and strictures due to ingesting an industrial detergent. To make a long story short, in one procedure, he changed her life and all of our lives. Lauren is 40 now and was recently informed after an endoscopy that the doctors could not believe how minimal scarring she has left after such a tragic accident. Dr. Hendren was so very kind to me and my husband at a terrible time in our lives. Thank you so much Dr. Hendren, Rest in Peace! ❤️

So sad to hear doc had passed. He was a amazing doctor who did a fourteen hour surgery on me which changed my whole life for the better. That was 1978 then about 12 years later I received a recall letter saying he had learned things and might need to redo my operation. I flew to Boston he was at childrens hosppital then no longer at mass general. After 4 days of testing everything was fine. I’m now 62 years old and doing great I could never think of a way to thank him for all the difference in my life he made. But I’m glad to see he lived a good long life.
My sincere condolences to your family. Thanks again doc

Dr. Hardy Hendren saved me from death in September, 1967. I had neuroblastoma. Cancer had started in my right adrenal glands, spread through my liver and then invaded my left adrenal glands. I met him in 2009 (as an adult) and he was humble, modest, and amazing. A couple years later he was going up to Dartmouth College (next to where I lived) and made plans with me to have lunch with him, his wife, and his granddaughter. He is everything that I could ever dream of being. Jennifer A. Sinclair

Dr Hendren was an absolute lifeline to two brand new parents. We were drowning in a sea of different things we “should” do for our son, all of which were never viable options for us in our minds. Dr Hendren saw him for approximately 20 minutes and told us what he would do to help our son. He was true to his word, and we have never regretted for one moment trusting his knowledge and expertise. Our son is now 32 years old and living a normal, healthy life. Dr Hendren will forever be our true hero and will live on in our hearts. Our sympathies go out to his family. He was truly a most wonderful man.

He saved my daughters life 40 years ago. When I bought my daughter to him she was just 2 years old. She had a blocked intestines, abscesses in her liver, abdomen, and pelvis. She was misdiagnosed in Gloucester and her appendix ruptured. My daughter was in Addison Gilbert Hospital, it was the local hospital. When I first took her to the doctors, I said I think she has appendicitis. The doctor there asked me where I got my license to practice medicine. Every day for 6 days I took her to the hospital emergency room. On the 6th day her fever was 106. After the doctor examined her for the 6th time, he came out and said her appendix ruptured. For 3 weeks I watched my daughter go from 26 pounds to 16 in Addison Gilbert Hospital. So I packed my daughter up and took her to Children's Hospital in Boston. In the admissions office my daughter vomited bile and immediately admissions called for a doctor. It was Dr Hendren. He order several test but he decided he had to do an exploratory himself. My daughter spent 6 weeks in intensive care, and Dr Hendren told me that she would have died within hours. I could not thank him enough for what he did for my family. My heart goes out to his family, he was a great man. Thank you

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Hendrons’s passing. He performed ground-breaking surgery on me was just 15. My mom brought me to him with my medical records in tow, after years of illness and surgeries, but there were no doctors locally that knew how to fix my problem. Thankfully my amazing pediatric urologist researched and found Dr. Hendron and sent us for a consult. We flew to Boston from Charlotte which was my very first flight ever… he said he could do it and reassured my mom that he was the only surgeon that do this type of surgery and added that he has never done it before. Well he did with success and I wish I had taken the time to visit him with my husband and daughter before he passed. I will forever be grateful for his amazing gift- He has certainly left his legacy of healing and compassion for generations to come.

I have sent pics, including my wife and daughter.
I spoke with Dr. Hendren a few years back, and was able to send him a pic with my then, little girl.
She is about to graduate high school. I waited until my 30’s to get married, and was mid 30’s when she was born. She is our biological child, though that wouldn’t truly matter… I have her, largely in part due to Dr. Hendren.
I had many trips to MGH, from probably the very late 60’s, early 70’s…up to the early 80’s. Last time I saw Dr. Hendren, he came to Texas while I was in the police academy (1989), I went to see him at Cooks Children Hospital, where he STILL wanted to examine his fine work.
The only thing I wish would have been different for my family is, I wish we would’ve known how important it is for children to get PTSD counseling, when they have surgeries during all stages of development.
Dr. Hendren told my mother, I would one day father a child…
I cannot say that I truly believed him, but look at us now. I love you Dr. Hendren, and I am so thankful for you, and your team. Hope Dorothy is still around to see this as well. May God Bless Eleanor and the entire Hendren family.
He was a great man, and I look forward to our talks in Heaven.

My mom literally searched the world to find the best surgeon available to try to save my little sister Susie's life when she was born with spina bifida (back in the 70's) and was told she "probably wouldnt live past the age of 13". My mom ended up at Childrens Hospital in Boston where she found Dr. Hardy Hendren who would not only perform ground breaking surgery that literally saved my sisters life, but which has allowed her to live a full life now into 40's which has even included WALKING DOWN THE AISLE with the love of her life John. None of this would have been possible without doctor Hendren and the many sacrifices he, his wife, and family had to make over the years and for that Susie, myself, and my entire family will be forever grateful and want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. May you all find comfort in knowing how truly gifted, special, and LOVED Hardy Hendren was. May he rest in peace. Lisa DiBello, Charlestown, RI

Dr Hendren and I worked together in the operating room at Boston Children’s. Your father, grandfather, husband, in-law, saved the life of a family friend with his pioneering surgical skills, she was born with no ureters. I brought her in to see him in the late 1990’s. Dr. Hendren was also there when I found out what happened to my brother’s kidneys my parents donated in 1973. The bear hug I got almost cracked ribs, he told me the story of his daughter. Dr Hendren was one of the most amazing men I had the privilege to work with, I am profoundly sorry for your loss.
