Richard Allen Brown, 82, of Carver, passed away on April 8, 2023 at Benchmark Plymouth Crossings in Plymouth.

Richard was born at the Jordan Hospital in Plymouth on Christmas Day, 1940 to Harmon and Elsie (Robbins) Brown, being their first child. He attended Plymouth Elementary Schools and graduated in 1959 from Silver Lake Regional High School. He went on to study Draftsmanship at Franklin Technical Institute in Boston.

He initially worked alongside his Father and Brother, all crafted stone masons. As Mayflower Descendants great pride was taken in building the stone foundation and calibration of the wheel at the Jenny Grist Mill in 1969. He then worked for both Petocchi and Silva paving companies, and Souza’s Fish prior to his 35 years as custodian and head custodian at the Governor John Carver elementary school in Carver. After retirement he worked at the Plymouth location of Crystal Lake Gardens. His talent and knowledge of gardening was useful in assisting customers along with his work ethic. Richard loved nature, animals, and the deer and wildlife that appeared on his wooded property. With is love of flowers he enjoyed reading gardening books, magazines, catalogs and other gardening publications. He enjoyed country music and old time TV shows. He especially loved and was devoted to his family.

Richard is survived by his brother Robert Brown of Chelsea, VT and his companion Margaret Gaffney, his sister Marjorie Fontes and her husband Thaddeus Fontes, Sr. of Plymouth. Richard is also survived by his niece Marissa (Fontes) Bealieu and her husband Jason of East Freetown, nephew Thaddeus Fontes Jr., of Plymouth, as well as his niece Jennifer (Brown) Sims. Two great nephews Rylan Beaulieu and Brady Beaulieu of East Freetown were young favorites. Richard is predeceased by his parents Harmon and Elsie (Robbins) Brown.

Richard lived and worked in Plymouth and Carver all his life, and was devoted to family, enjoyed his acquaintances, was a gentleman. He is sadly missed by his family and the Paduch’s who treated him like family.

Richard is also especially missed by his neighbor, Louise Boisvert, who visited him weekly at Benchmark during good and not so good days, surely appreciated his friendship, and kind helpfulness. Louise remains a treasured friend to his devoted and cherished sister Marjorie. Richard was very fond of his home at Plymouth Crossings, his Benchmark and Beacon “families”, who seemed to be especially touched by him during his much too brief stay. The family greatly appreciates and thanks all for Richard’s support and care.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, April 14th from 4-6:00 PM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 116 Main st. (Rt. 58) Carver. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 15th, at 10:00 AM, at Lakenham cemetery in Carver with Pastor Michael Paduch officiating.
