Obituary of Elizabeth J Gillig
Elizabeth J. "Betty" Gillig (nee Peacock), 92, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2023 at the Alliance Health at Maples nursing home in Wrentham, Massachusetts, after a long battle with COPD. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Edward Joseph Peacock and Evelyn (nee Destories) Peacock. Betty was one of five girls and a cherished sister to her four late siblings, Maureen Wilkie, Rita Berkos, Peggy Bartels and Myra Kelly. She was the mother of Steven (Linda), John P. Jr., Roy (Pamela) Gillig, and Chris Ann (Michael) Gibney, and the beloved grandmother to twelve grandchildren.
Betty met and married John P. "Jack" Gillig, in Chicago. The couple moved to the East Coast, raising their four children and eventually settling in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in 1976. After Jack's passing in 1994, Betty briefly moved back to Chicago to be closer to her sisters before returning to Duxbury in 2000 to spend more time with her children, grandchildren, and friends.
Betty served on the boards of both the Duxbury Garden Club and the Duxbury Republican Club, sharing her love for gardening and community engagement. Her generous spirit also led her to volunteer at the King Caesar House and Jordan Hospital.
Betty was proud of her dual citizenship, being both a U.S. citizen and an Irish citizen through her mother's heritage. A voracious reader, she had a particular fondness for Irish authors and settings as well as mystery novels. Among her friends, Betty was renowned for her trivia prowess and wealth of knowledge on a multitude of subjects.
Betty's memory will live on through the lives she touched and the stories she shared. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty's memory may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date, honoring the exceptional woman who will be deeply missed.
In Loving Memory
