Dear DY staff, family, and friends:
My sister and I were so touched by your remembrance and fundraiser for Dr. Funk as we attended a girls varsity volleyball game between the DY Dolphins versus the Dartmouth Indians.
We had the pleasure of sitting with the Dolphin Dig Green fans as we blended in well with our green shirts! He sounds like he was a wonderful educator, sports enthusiast and family man.
We feel fortunate to have driven down to Cape Cod for such
a heartfelt event. Blessings to all…Go Dolphins!
Sincerely-
Robin and Gayle

Paul was a great teammate and friend during our time together at UConn. Tough as nails, competitive as can be. Quick to laugh and a great person with whom to decompress from the pressures of it all. We lost touch over the years, but I knew of all his successes as a coach and teacher/administrator. Paul was always dedicated to his people and doing right by them, kindhearted to the core. I cherish our time together and extend my deepest sympathy to his family and community. Such a loss. RIP Funkster.

As we all know, Coach Funk was an amazing football coach. One fond memory I have of him was during football camp in August of 2018. I got to the school bright and early for practice, and I felt sick that day. I told Coach Funk that I would go home and get some rest, I didn’t think I’d be able to practice that day. He went on to convince me to stay, in order to fight for a starting spot on the offensive line. It was then I realized how much he cared about the hard work, discipline and toughness of his players. Not only did it make us into great football players, but it turned us into great young men. To this day, I still hold myself to Funk’s standards. He allowed me to see a whole new level of mental and physical toughness I never knew I had. My favorite quote by him was: “Championships are won on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s”

I had Mr. Funk for science class at the Parlin Jr. High, and again in Everett High. He was the one teacher that didn't put you to sleep when he was talking. He made every class fun and engaging, and was just the nicest person when you talked to him one-on-one. I'm heartbroken to learn he's gone so young, and my deepest condolences go to his family.

Q: What will you never forget about Paul?
A: I will never forget how proud Coach Funk was of all of his students. From 10th grade anatomy to visiting me at UCONN, he was one of my biggest supporters. One of my first memories was winning the gingerbread house contest with him in 2011. And my favorite memory was when he came with his family to visit me at UCONN it had just been a blizzard. He was visiting for alumni weekend with the baseball team. I remember spending 2 hours digging out my car because lunch with Coach Funk was something I wouldn’t have missed for the world. The impact he had on not only me, but my whole graduating class and community was profound and will never be forgotten.

Words can not express how heavy my heart was learning about Paul's passing. It was a shock like no other. I will greatly miss his fond appreciation for the Visual Arts program and his support as a kind and caring member of the administration team. Matthew 5:4 - Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. May the Funk family find peace and comfort in the huge outpouring of a supportive community.

So sorry for your loss. Paul will be missed, and he did everything the right way. Always will remember the good times with him in the early 90"s. Playing with him with the Wakefield Merchants and all the good times hanging with the guys after. Paul was one heck competitor and tough.

Dr. Funk was truly the best. Every morning when I came in for the announcements, he would always ask me for outfit advice and when I complimented something extra, I would ask, "did your wife get it for you?" and he would say, "she has good taste and she's never wrong." He truly thought "beautiful baby dolphins" was the funniest thing every morning. The day I got into college he was my biggest supporter and got me a T-shirt the very next day and hand-wrote me a card I still have. He truly went above and beyond for every student and did everything possible to make sure we all knew that at least one person was proud of us and believed in us unconditionally. We formed a real "bestie-gang" in the main office with everyone every morning and even when senioritis was hitting hard, I would always think of how disappointed he would be if I didn't show up. He was so so so proud of his kids and his extended dolphin kids. He held so much love for everyone that walked through those doors and will be remembered forever. We will miss you Dr. Principal Coach Funk <3. Sending love.

Paul was a teammate and roommate of mine at UCONN. In the notorious/ hilarious Carriage House apartments.
We had so much fun day in day out. On the field and off of it.
On the field, nobody played more hard nosed and nobody out toughed him physically when contact plays happened in the middle of the infield. He gave his body up a lot to get outs.
He willed himself to making plays when it counted. Bared down and battled in counts at the plate. Found a way to get to a tough ball with the glove and make a play.
Off the field, alot of laughter. And joking. Hanging out watching games at the apt. Bus rides.
The cafeteria where all the teams ate. The hockey guys were so funny..The football guys with twenty entrees on their trays lol..God that was consistently hilarious..
We were road roommates too. Just shooting the breeze in the hotels. Life talks. Girlfriend talks. Baseball talks, trying to keep each other sane or even keeled as possible through the highs and lows of a season..
As a friend he always had my back. Emotionally, and everything else too..
I just love the guy and always will. My brother...

Q: How did you meet Paul?
A: Either it was on the football field, on the ice or baseball diamond... as opponents. Im sure we played against each other since we were little guys. But, we got to be on the same side during the Shriners game at the end of our senior year back in 89' and became instant friends. Sending love and thoughts to your family, friends and the community that all love you . We are all lucky to call you a friend.

I enjoyed going to watch his baseball and football games, he said I brought him luck.
One of the nicest guys I`ve met.

Our Deepest condolences to the Funk Family from Special Olympics Massachusetts. Paul was very pivotal in welcoming in Unified Sports into the D-Y school community. We spoke a few times and he was so very excited to provide options for those students that had not yet been able to enjoy interscholastic sports and wear the D-Y colors. Thank you for hosting Jamborees!
Ever the coach, ever the fan - he was cheering for those students and all students.
We are with you.

Dr. Funk was always so kind to me. Everyday he would greet the students with a big smile on his face, ready to make a positive impact on our educations. Dr. Funk supported me in my hopes and dreams, writing a college letter of recommendation for me, never not believing that I would succeed. I will miss him, I know his shoes will never be filled, but his heart will always live on in the community.

Such devastating news hearing that Paul had passed so unexpectedly. I had the privilege of coaching Paul in football at Wakefield High and as a student in my PE class. Many years later I coached against him in the 2011 Super Bowl where he went on to beat his former coach and team to capture his first state title. His amazing ability as a coach and educator was only surpassed by his character, positive demeanor and leadership qualities. The whole Funk family share so many of his special traits. I always looked forward to meeting up with him and his dad to reminisce about the old Wakefield days and talk sports. Paul would always greet you with a big smile, laugh and positive attitude. I’m certain he made his friends, family, players and colleagues better people as the result of his interactions with each and every one of them. He unquestionably did that for me. He will be forever missed by all who had the honor and privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace Paul.

I was part of the search committee when Paul was an applicant for the football / teaching position in 2001.
What was clearly apparent was not just his knowledge but his enthusiasm - sharing all of this with his students.
His impact on the field was evident but he had a much stronger impact on his students.
When my daughter Kristen was diagnosed with lymphoma Paul was very
supportive of me. He kept my sprits up
and was a very good listener. I will forever be grateful for Paul.
Paul had a great sense of humor, he loved to laugh and joke with me. We both have a passion for boating - and shared some great stories
Paul’s legacy reached far beyond sports and it will continue to be his legacy for years to come.
I will miss Paul greatly but am forever grateful to have been fortunate to call him my friend.
Much love and respect

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Funk. As a member of the class of ‘03, I had the honor of being among the first of many lives that Dr. Funk influenced at DY. What a profound influence that was.
As a young man going through some personal struggles, I was in desperate need of consistency and strong leadership. Coach Funk, as we all knew him back then, provided that leadership and was an advocate for me… even at times when I didn’t necessarily deserve it. I will forever appreciate him for that and I’m grateful that I was able to share those feelings with him before his untimely passing.
I will always remember him as a great coach, a passionate leader, an invested mentor, and most importantly… a decent man. Thank you Coach.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the Funk family and friends.
Sincerely,
Eric Woodbury
