Obituary of Carl L. Santos

Carl L. “Big John” Santos, Sr.

It is with a heavy heart that the family of Carl “Big John”Lawrence Santos, Sr. of Carver, MA, announces his unexpected passing on August 31, 2023, at 91 years old.

Big John was born and raised in Carver, MA on Nov. 24, 1931 to the late John Santos of Cape Verde and Rosamond V. (Monteiro) Silva of Boston, MA.  He graduated from Plymouth High School with the Class of 1949.  A jack of all trades, he had several jobs including working as a miller at Cordage Park, a laborer at Pilgrim Nuclear Plant, a construction worker, and Shaw’s Supermarket of Carver.  Big John loved his scratch tickets, playing “the number”, dancing, playing cards, and munching on “goodies” such as ice cream, cookies, or whatever was available.     

Big John was married to his wife of 64 years the late Julia A. (Almeida) Santos.  He will be lovingly remembered by his two children Julia (Almeida) Peabody, Carl L. Santos, Jr. and his wife Janice.  His 5 grandchildren are Richard Pretti and his wife Stacey, Richard Almeida and his longtime partner Jennifer Brady, Ryan Almeida and his wife Melissa, Robin Almeida and her partner William Andrews, Crystal Santos-Steiblin and her husband John Steiblin.  His 9 great grandchildren are Alexandria, Elizabeth, Ryan Jr., Rachel, Ethan, Kai, Andrew, Jayden, and Jack. His great-great grandchildren are Mason, Lennyx, and another little bundle, LJ, on the way. He will be deeply missed by numerous nieces and nephews, family, and friends.  

He leaves behind his brother Darrell Silva and his wife Joan, sister-in-law Lydia Cross and her late husband Arthur, and brother–in-law George Andrade and his late wife Vicincia. He is predeceased by siblings Margaret Monteiro, Mitchell and his wife Barbara Santos, Mary (Santos) Almeida, and Jerome Santos and his wife Ethel “Peggy”.  

Visitation hours will be 4 PM – 8 PM Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023, at Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St., Kingston, MA.  Graveside services will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023 at Plymouth County Cemetery, 173 South Meadow Rd., Plymouth, MA.  The family would like to invite all to join them at the Upland Club, 76 Upland Rd., Plympton, MA. for a Celebration of Life.     

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Carver Fire Association.
