John Montosi Obituary
Guy John Montosi, Age 86, of Kingston, MA passed away on October 31st at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. John was born in Quincy, MA to Gaetano Montosi and Dorothy (Bestick) Montosi on June 29th, 1937. John grew up in Braintree and was an outstanding athlete at Braintree High School. His football and academic abilities earned him a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1955. Montosi played football as a starting center and linebacker for three years at UMASS and graduated with his B.S., and he later received his Masters of Education from Bridgewater State College.
He began his teaching career at Silver Lake Regional High School in 1959 where he taught math, science, health, and gym for 35 years. In 1960, he became the youngest head football coach in Massachusetts, taking the newly formed Silver Lake program and molding it for the next 20 years. In his final year of coaching in 1980, John led the Lakers to win the MIAA Super Bowl (vs. Somerset, 21-3). He was later inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997, and into the Silver Lake Regional Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
During his coaching years, John fell in love with Martha Kennedy, an English teacher who also taught at Silver Lake. They married in 1972, settled in Pembroke, and together raised their two children Jane and John.
In his retirement years, he continued to be a staple behind the bar at the Halifax Country Club and enjoyed playing lots of golf. He faithfully followed the coaching careers of some of his former players and got a great kick out of participating in the Manning Passing Academy. But above all, he valued time spent with his former players who had become lifelong friends.
Later he became a grandfather which gave him a huge boost. Whether next door or across the country, he was always up for the trip to spend time with his three grandchildren.
The family is comforted hearing from so many about the impact he had on their lives.
John is survived by his wife Martha Montosi of Kingston, MA; his daughter Jane Montosi Zumwalt and her husband Jason Zumwalt of Guilford, CT; his son Guy John Montosi Jr. and his wife Rachael (Kelley) Montosi of Kingston, MA; and his three grandchildren, Guy John Montosi the Third [“JT’], James Edward Zumwalt II, and Joan Alice Zumwalt; as well as his cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, November 8th from 4-8:00 PM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (Rt. 106) Kingston. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, November 9th at 11:00 AM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (Rt. 106) Kingston.
