Obituary of Leo Thomas Scarry
Leo Thomas Scarry of Duxbury, formerly of Hingham, died peacefully on January 26, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Leo was 99 years of age.
He was born on August 16, 1924 to John and Mary Louise Barbara (McClure) Scarry. He was raised in Dorchester and summered at Nantasket beach in Hull.
Leo attended school in Dorchester and Boston. He started kindergarten at the age of 4, skipped the third grade as he excelled in his studies, and graduated high school at the age of 15. He was too young for college at this juncture, so he attended Boston Latin prior to his start at Boston University.
He attended Boston University undergraduate school for a year and a half until he entered into the Army during WWII. During his service in WWII, from 1943 to 1945, he proudly served as a sergeant in England. Upon his return in 1945 he continued in the Air National Guard as a captain in Boston.
He returned to Boston University after 3 years of service and completed his undergraduate degree. He then attended Boston University Law school and received his Doctorate in Law in 1950 and passed the Bar exam in 1951. He practiced law for 72 years and at the age of 97 he retired and closed his law practice in Plymouth.
Leo was predeceased by the love of his life Anne T. Scarry (Dunphy) with whom he was married to for 65 years.
Leo was the youngest of 5 children and is predeceased by his brothers, John (Jack), Richard, Edward, and his sister Barbara Halton (Scarry).
Leo is survived by his children, Leo T. Scarry Jr. and his wife Karen of Hingham, Brian A. Scarry of Hingham, Lisa A. Scarry of Boxford, Alison M. Scarry of Amesbury, Tracy P. Copp and her Husband Bruce of Duxbury.
His treasured grandchildren, Lindsey (Joey), Patrick (Nicole), Casey, Keara, Sean, Gabriel (Jennifer), Gregory (Meghan), Nicholas (Hayley), Samantha (Christian) and Liam.
His precious great-grandchildren, Jack, Bellamy, Bryn, Rose, Rylee, and Jameson.
His many nieces and nephews and dear friends that he considered part of his family.
He was a proud member of the American Legion in Duxbury where he served as the Judge Advocate and was the last WWII veteran in the town of Duxbury. He was also a devoted member of Holy Family Church in Duxbury, and St Paul’s church in Hingham.
He was a voracious reader, loved watching all sports and playing hockey and golf, he loved the beach, long rides with our mother, and most of all spending time with family and friends sharing so many stories and laughing endlessly.
Calling hours for Leo will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home 216 Main St. Kingston, Ma on Thursday, February 1st, from 4 to 8pm, A Funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 2nd, at 10am at the Holy Family Church in Duxbury followed by a burial at the Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury.
