Obituary of Elizabeth J. Monks
Elizabeth J. “Betty” (Newson) Monks, our dearly treasured wife, mother and grandparent, passed away on June 11, 2024 at Bay Path Nursing Center in Duxbury, Mass.
She was born in Boston, Mass.to Stanley and Elizabeth Newson on October 11,1934. She grew up living in Quincy and Braintree, Mass. The family spent their summers at their camp on Rocky Pond in the Myles Standish Reservation in Plymouth, Mass. Betty graduated from Braintree High School in 1952 and from Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in 1954. She was one of only a few women attending Bentley at that time. In 2004 Bentley College and the Alumni Association recognized her as a member of the Blue and Gold Society in recognition of fifty (50) years of Bentley Pride and Loyalty. In 2001 she graduated from Massasoit Community College with an Associate Degree in Applied Science and completed the travel designation specialist program through the Institute of Certified Travel Agents. She was married for seventy (70) years to Robert I. “Bob” Monks who passed away in January, 2024.They enjoyed many years of traveling and boating/sailing in Duxbury/Plymouth Bay. She raised her four (4) children in Rockland, Mass. Later she and Bob lived in Kingston, Mass. and Woolwich, Maine. They returned to Massachusetts to live in Pembroke. She worked for 40 years in the accounting field at various businesses from Boston to Cape Cod.
Betty had an adventurous spirit. Later in life she enjoyed a ride in the Goodyear Blimp and a seaplane tour over Mid-Coast Maine. She enjoyed volunteering and being active in her community. In Rockland, Mass. she was a past president of the Woman’s PM Club. For many years she was involved with arranging/supporting Christmas parties for the children at the Cardinal Cushing School. Living in Kingston, Mass she served on numerous citizen committees from 1991 thru 2003, last serving on the Finance Committee. After returning to live in Pembroke, Mass. she served on the town Advisory Committee. While living in Maine she enjoyed making and being with new friends of the local Red Hat Society group.
She is survived by her children. A son, Stephen Monks (Nancy) of Halifax, Mass. Her three daughters; Merrilee Monks-Paine (Lewis) of Auburn Maine, Kathryn Botto (Robert) of Halifax, Mass., Allyson Foley (Brian) of Kingston, Mass. Her 8 grandchildren; Ryan Botto (Jill) and Brianne Krueger (Frank) of Halifax, Mass., Christie DiCarlo (Anthony) of South Easton, Mass., Tyler Monks (Charlotte) of Halifax, Mass., Chelsey Monks of Marshfield, Mass., Marella Paine of Auburn, Maine, Carissa Ryan (Joe) of Rochester, N.H., Erin Foley (Kathryn Kelley) of Kingston, Mass. And 10 great-grandchildren; Riley Botto, Thatcher Krueger, Whitney Krueger, Anthony Robert DiCarlo, Owen Monks, Maylee Paine-Robinson, Monet Robinson, Charlotte Ryan, Edie Foley and Felix Foley.
The family would like to thank the caregivers from the following organizations who provided care to Betty in the last few years; Home Instead, Bay Path Nursing Center and Cranberry Hospice.

Visitation will be held at Shepherd’s Funeral Home ,216 Main St., in Kingston, Mass. on Saturday, June 22, 2024 from 10 am until 12(noon). A funeral ceremony will be held at noon followed by a graveside service at the Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury, Mass.
