Obituary of Dorothy T. Sweeney

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dorthy T. (Dolly) Sweeney of Halifax passed away peacefully on July 19th with her family by her side. Dolly was born in Brookline on March 11, 1936, to James and Dorothy Kenefick.

Dolly grew up in Brookline as she attended Brookline High school where she was a cheerleader and an athlete and went on to work at Loyal Life insurance in Kenmore Square. There is still folklore that Dolly climbed to the top of the impossibly high structure in front of the Brookline Library. Dolly met the love of her life Bill Sweeney while growing up in Brookline and had a love story that lasted over 60 years. Dolly called Billy her rock and kept her grounded as their years went by. Billy and Dolly were as close as can be and devoted to each other their entire lives.

Dolly and Billy moved to Halifax in 1965 after building their family home from the ground up. She may not have been the best cook in the kitchen but that didn’t bother her one bit as she could wield a hammer and handle any tool, she helped lay down the hardwood floors in their home that are still pristine today. she could reupholster furniture, make drapes, was a wiz with a sewing machine and decorate cakes, Dolly could magically organize any space that looked impossible and was famous for making the most awesome baby bibs from face clothes that she made especially for any new baby that came into her life.

Dolly helped found Halifax Girls Softball league in Halifax in the late 1960s and was active in her community along with Bill, especially with the Monponsett Lake Shores Improvement Association. That is where she made her lifelong friends and had some of the best times of her life. One thing everyone could agree on about Dolly is that she absolutely loved Christmas and made it magical for her family every year, she also had an absolute passion for animals and would pay more attention to them instead of people in any social gathering.

Dolly was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Bill, and survived by her daughter Karen Bere and husband Bob of Pembroke, grandchildren Kristen M. Bere of Hillsborough and Dennis J. Bere of Halifax. She is also survived by her brother James Kenefick of Brookline, nieces Tracey Barney and Kristen Battitte of Chestnut Hill. She was the loving sister of Marjorie Coyne and John Kenefick of Brookline and other beloved nieces and nephews.

Memorial visitng hours will be held on Thursday, July 25th from 4-7:00 PM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (Rt. 106) Kingston.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Animal Rescue league in Dollys name.
