From early boyhood, Murph and I played together all the time. Stickball, whiffleball, broomball, it didn’t matter. More basketball at Bradstreet School or Aplin Playground. He was such a great teammate throughout all of high school and even after that playing Police League baseball in the summers during college.
Most importantly… Murph was a wonderful friend.
He will be sorely missed.
God bless you Bob.

Dear Murphy Family,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Murph’s passing. Although the miles and life’s journeys separated us after our North Andover High School days, the shared experiences with Murph will always be with me. What a great athlete, teammate, and good guy! From youth Little League baseball, St Mike’s CYO basketball, summer league baseball, and NAHS basketball & baseball, Murph was always there with his steady sports excellence and team play. I note that we shared the same NA mentors and coaches…. Bill McEvoy, Benny Lee, Bob Licare, Tom Powers and the NA Boosters Club. NA was a small sports crazy town in the 50s & 60s where everybody knew everybody, and the sports fed into community. Kids gained experiences and values that were transferable into future walks of life. Murph is a great example of this.
My Deepest Sympathy,
Ron McRobbie

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Robert?
A: Bob was a senior captain of the football and basketball teams on which we played together. I was a shy sophomore who was impressed with Bob's ability to be both tenacious on the field of play and encouraging to his developing teammates. His tenacity to be his best was a trait I adopted for my days playing college basketball and in the military as well as a corporate executive. I will always remember him as a focused yet encouraging teammate.

Coach Murphy always had an athletic bounce in his step! Very positive influence on so many kids at Silver Lake! Fond memories indeed. My sincere condolences to his family.

So sad to hear of Murphy's passing. He was my gym teacher many years ago (class of 94) and he was awesome.. he actually nick named me Rosebud, which stuck with me all through high school. Find memories. Sending so much love to his family and friends ❤️

I had little interest in scholastics or sports in high school but loved to raise hell. One Friday night during my last year at Silver Lake, some of us went to the Sands at White Horse Beach to hear “Cat’s Ass”, the best band on the South Shore. We ran into our gym teacher, Mr. Murphy. “What you guys doing here” he asked. “You’re not eighteen!” He talked to us for a while and asked if we had learned a trade while in school. I told him that I took welding and was going to work at the Quincy Shipyard with my uncles. He thought that was great and told us we would be ok. Mr. Murphy, I am proud to say that I recently retired from a long and successful career in welding. And thank you for not squealing on us that night fifty years ago!

You were a great teacher. You made gym class tolerable by always making fun of me. Thanks Murph. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Murph showed up at SLRHS around 70/71/72, not 100% sure. But he was young, energetic and kind. He was one of our basketball coaches (on some good teams) and he made us a better team with his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. Some very competitive practices. Very sad to learn of his passing. My sincere condolences to his family.
