Eulogy for Gerard "Jerry" Tousignant
Good morning, everyone.
We are gathered here today to honor and celebrate the life of a remarkable man—Gerard "Jerry" Tousignant, a beloved husband, father, and friend. For those of us fortunate enough to know Jerry, we were blessed to witness a life of genuine kindness, unwavering faith, and unshakable love.
My name is Diane Peters, and I am honored to share a few words today about my father, a man whose heart was as vast as his smile. Jerry was an incredible family man. He married my mother, Suzie, in 1957 at Boston's Holy Cross Cathedral, beginning a life together built on a deep love for one another. From that day forward, he was a steadfast partner to her, and an equally devoted father to me and my siblings.
Dad’s belief in being a good Christian was not defined by words alone. It was reflected in his actions, in the way he lived every day. He believed that how you treat others—whether friends, strangers, or family—was the true measure of your character. His approach was simple yet profound: greet people with a smile, share kindness, and always offer a gentle hello. This wasn’t just advice; it was how he lived his life. Everywhere we went, from the grocery store to the neighborhood, Dad would strike up conversations with anyone he met. As a teenager, I would sometimes cringe at how often he spoke to strangers, I would find myself saying, "Come-on Dad, let's go". But now I see it for what it was—a true reflection of his spirit. He made people feel seen, valued, and appreciated.
Anyone who met my father would describe him as a "lovely man" or "such a nice guy." Those who knew him well would say he was "genuine"—and that was the truth. Dad’s warmth and jovial nature made him a joy to be around. He was a man who could find something to laugh about with almost anyone, and his ability to share a smile was contagious. His kindness left an impression on everyone he met, and he taught us all the power of a kind word and a warm gesture.
Dad was also a hard worker. There were times when he worked two or three jobs to provide for us, and though his hours were long, there was never any shortage of love in our home. His dedication to our family never wavered, and he worked tirelessly to ensure we had what we needed, even if it meant sacrificing his own time and desires. Yet, through all his hard work, he was always there for us when we needed him. He knew how to make us feel loved, no matter how busy or tired he might have been.
One of the greatest gifts my father gave us was his ability to forgive and ask for forgiveness. As a Christian, he understood the importance of humility and grace. His biggest regret was that he couldn’t spend more time with us or give us everything we desired, but we always knew his love for us was limitless. He taught us that love doesn’t come from material things, but from the moments we share and the way we care for each other.
In his own quiet, humble way, Dad lived out his faith every single day. He showed us the true meaning of love, sacrifice, and service. He was proud of serving our Nation in the Navy during the Korean War, and his patriotism was something he carried with him throughout his life.
One summer, my husband and I had the privilege of traveling to Montreal with Dad and his sister Ursula for a long weekend. While we were touring in Quebec, a woman approached us. She had seen his "Korea Veteran" cap and asked if he had served in the Korean War. Dad said yes, and she thanked him with a deep sense of gratitude. "I am Korean," she said, "Thank you so much for your service. I am here today because of you and all the men who fought for our freedom. I’ve always wanted to meet someone who served." This heartfelt moment left a lasting impression on all of us. It was a reminder of the far-reaching impact of Dad's service—how his sacrifice contributed to the freedoms that so many of us hold dear.
His legacy will live on in each of us—in the kindness we show to others, the laughter we share, and the love we carry forward. Dad’s life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and service to others. His memory will live on, not only in the stories we share but in the way we choose to live our lives with kindness, humility, and a deep respect for others.
So today, as we say goodbye to this wonderful man, let us remember him for the joy he brought into our lives, the lessons he taught us, and the example he set. His spirit lives on in all of us who were lucky enough to know him.
Thank you, Dad, for everything you gave us. We will miss you deeply, but we know that your love and your light will continue to guide us.
Rest in peace, Jerry. You will always be in our hearts, and may the fair winds and wallowing seas guide you on your heavenly journey.

My Dad Jerry, was kind to everyone, genuinely happy and smiling, loved his children, grand children, and his family deeply. He was proud of his family and their accomplishments, serving in the military, and would lend a helping hand to just about anyone who asked. He was a great Dad, and I am so blessed to be his daughter. Thank you Dad!
