Wes, sad to read of your wife's passing. As Tree Warden in Milton I often have used her publications regarding and still do for choosing the right plant for the right place. It is my bible. I wish you the best in this sad time without your best friend.

Deborah and Wes lived across the street from my Mom and Dad. They had many driveway visits that included wonderful conversations ranging from plants and trees to local politics. As my parents grew older, Deborah and Wes were an extra set of watchful eyes looking out for their wellbeing.
When my son, daughter-in-law and family bought my parent’s home the visits continued. I know Josh and Wendy loved having them as neighbors and enjoyed their many visits back and forth especially the ones that included time in their beautiful secret garden.

Deborah was a dear friend to me for 47 years.
We first met sharing an office at 32 Belmont Street (shared with the DA's office) for Plymouth County Extension Service. Later we both moved to Hanson, the main office, where we worked alongside each other. We became fast "forever" friends. During the storm of 1978 she hiked to my apartment in Brockton, as we had to nix plans to go to Winter Carnival in Quebec with roads closed. We then hiked to Westgate Mall to the movie where we watch the same show 3 times! We knew then that we would always be there for each other in good times and in bad.
At one point I became her "boss", as County Extension Director, a job she assumed after my retirement in 2000 adding administrative budgets and staff issues to her busy Horticultural calling.
In following years we travelled to the Mass Ag Club meetings, she always loaded the car with table arrangements, and insisting on lively table conversations. She followed me as club President (2nd woman in the club's history of 184 years).
For 20 years we were members of the Women of Wealth (WOW) investment club of Marshfield. She always came prepared with research, and brought up topics of plants, politics and wine at just about every meeting. She remembered and reminded us of stocks we sold that we shouldn't have, or didn't buy. She was our social director extraordinaire.
So many fond memories, too numerous to mention, I was a bridesmaid in her wedding to Wes; Deborah and I hired Wes following his cross-country bike trip to Mass. for a short stint before went to school to become a Physicians Asst. (PA). Deb was at my side during several medical issues, always finding me the best doctor to treat me, and encouraging best treatment. Lots of wellness checks to many of her friends (researching illnesses and giving the best advice)!
In early years many fun New Year adventures, often to ski resorts and one special time a spur of the moment trip to Lake Placid post-Olympic Trials. So many laughs, so many stories, such a great forever friend.
Deb always called me (and others) on New Years Eve to wish a Happy Year, she stayed close to the UMass Extension "family".
I will think of Deborah's amazing spirit, courage and spunk for the rest of my life on this earth. I will take the torch and make those calls. Til we meet again...my friend RIP. You were the best...

My dear neighbor Deborah died after Christmas. My family and I are heartbroken by the loss of her. Deborah and I would have long conversations starting about plants, which she was an expert, and then covering the latest political news, Heather Cox Richardson posts, and usually get to chatting about our favorite cozy mystery novels (Louise Penny, Thursday murder club). We laughed, we raged all in that sacred neighbor space in the driveway on an unexpected afternoon.
She and Wes took us in and made us feel at home here. She let us ramble all over her incredible Arboretum of a yard, taught us the smell of witch hazel, the view at each angle of her garden, her memorial trees to beloved friends. We always came home with a spare plant, or plan to dig up a dogwood. Our yard and life is full of the seeds she gave us.

Debbie was one of a kind and passionate about everything she loved from people to plants. She and my late mother (Jade) were good friends my entire life so I have many memories of her and Wes. Lots of memories of all of us hanging out at the beach on Cape Cod and Sanibel Island. Debbie accidentally hooking the captain when casting during a day fishing trip together in Sanibel, waiting for hours during the Boston Marathon for our runners group to finish, partying at the beach cottage in Rocky Nook on the 4th of July and watching the fireworks, going to the Music Circus for a Beach Boys tribute band and she was next to me singing every word to every song, visiting my grandfather when he was in a MA hospital from a heart attack and we lived in NJ, pool parties in her backyard and showing up for all my graduations. Every year we waited for her horticultural calendar with beautiful pictures and descriptions. She was the life of the party and gave the warmest hugs. My deepest condolences to Wes, Pamela and her entire family. Until we meet again XOXOXO.

Deborah was an amazing educator, a brilliant colleague but most of all a cherished friend. She had an amazing talent for cultivating both plants and friends. Her unforgettable charm, quick wit and personal vibrancy will be among the many qualities that I will long treasure.

Larger than life. That is what Deb was to me. She stuffed more into her life than almost anyone else I ever knew-- just look at her garden, her home, her energy. She was a character, and an inspiration, and I will miss her terribly. Her spirit lives on for me through the plants that she generously shared.

My heart aches this morning as I learn of Deborah's passing. We were childhood friends living across the street from one another in Brockton. Although not related in any way, we have been brother and sister since the age of three (Deborah was 6 days older than me) with our relationship being the same throughout our lives. Yes, we would laugh, argue, and make up a few minutes later. She always brought joy to me. My sympathies go out to Wes, Pamela, and other relatives. Nancy and I are currently in New Mexico so we will not be able to attend the services in January. However, Deborah, I will be fully with you in spirit. Love to all

I have known Deb for more than 30 years, as a extension professional and member of the Horticultural Club of Boston. Deb was a bright light at meetings - always sharing the newest pest and disease issues, weather insights, new plants, even long after she had "retired." She never actually retired, as plants people know you never retire from being passionate about plants. Deb, we will miss your kind greetings and great hugs. Rest in Peace Lady!
