Obituary of Joseph J. Rebello

Joseph J.Rebello, retired Kingston Police Chief, died on June 29, 2014, while enjoying one of his great passions in life – riding his motorcycle. He was 55 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Kathleen (Doherty) Rebello and his two children, Michael and Devin. He is also survived by his brother Anthony A. Rebello and his wife, Ann Rebello, of Ponce Inlet, FL; sister Donna Arsenault of Ware, MA; sister Gayle Arsenault of Chicopee, MA; brother David Ely and his wife Fran Ely, of Haymarket, VA; his brothers and sisters-in-law;mother-in-law; and sixteen nieces and nephews.
Joe was born in Worcester, on November 29, 1958, to the late Beatrice (Chevrette) and Joseph J. Rebello. He spent a few early years in Worcester, but lived the majority of his youth growing up in Belchertown, MA. His desire to help people lead him to a career in law enforcement, earning Bachelor and Masters degrees from Curry College. He began his career as a CSO for the town of Amherst, MA, and part-time police officer for the town of Belchertown, MA, before obtaining a full-time position as a patrolman and then Sergeant at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He recently retired after a 33 year career, 23 of them serving as Chief of Police in the Massachusetts towns of Shutesbury, Monson, Stow, and Kingston. He was active within the law enforcement community and was past-president of both Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association (2012) and New England Association of Chiefs of Police (2006).
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, July 6th at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (rt. 106) Kingston, from 2-4:00 PM, a police walkthrough will take place from 4-5:00 PM, and visiting hours will continue until 8:00 PM.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held at the Indian Pond Country Club, 60 Country Club Way, Kingston on Monday, July 7th at 11:00 AM. Everyone is encouraged to wear Hawaiian attire for the celebration of life. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Joe's family kindly requests donations may be made to support the recovery of Joe’s dear friend and riding companion, Chief Richard Braga (Ret), who was severely injured in the accident.The Hudson Massachusetts Police Association has established the Recovery Fund for Richard Braga, account number 2187.
