My first memory of David underscores his daredevil nature and the difficulties he had challenging time & space with speed. The first challenge I witnessed occurred one day when his mother pulled up alongside us on Oceanus street near the cliffs that demarked where the road & the woods met. She pulled up in her Blue Station Wagon where David hurriedly pulled a brand new Huffy from the rear tailgate then daringly pushed the bicycle up to the top of the 50 foot hill and jumped up on the seat & flew down the hill only to skid on the tar below falling as he yelled hey ma look at this. Many more instances like that followed mostly he met the challenge but at times I'd see his mishaps mostly on the bus where he would have his mouth bandaged eyes blackened and head wounds usually on the front after skiing trips or mishaps with other cycles. He always had a story explaining the mishap. Oftentimes David would throw me on the back of the motorized cycles and we'd have a grand time as he would narrow the gap between time & space via acceleration. Sometimes it would be on his 50 but I dare say more than a few times it was on his brother Billy's Honda 450 or 550 somewhere in the woods on the ice or on the deer tracks we were fortunate to have in the old wooded towns of Pembroke Hanson Halifax & Kingston. One of my favorite things to do to David was to sneak up on him when he was up to his rapscallion antics including taking the hinges off the shed where Billy locked up his Honda's or tending to his pot plants in the yard. I swear that kid would jump 10 feet off the ground when I busted him always landing with a smile and the cursory statement `"Jesus Danny you scared the shit out of me." We were friends. Whenever he got into trouble or was in need it was at my house where he would come. 3:00 in the morning at the foot of my bed after his dad died in an auto accident. Whenever he got into it with someone in his family or in the neighborhood he"d just come upstairs & we'd talk.
